I think the first time that i manage to see Lin Zheng Ying was when i was around 10 years old. It was during an occasional family gathering that i manage to catch his first movie. I still remember the anticipation i had when my older cousin told me that it's going to be a great horror film. And indeed i was not disappointed. It was a really good one.

Around the 1990s, horror movies were quite popular (especially to those people who are somewhat superstitious like me). At the age of around 10, i was very much under the influence of my grandparents and parents. Through them, i became quite superstitious in many kind of things - Supernatural things especially.

Although i am a freethinker now, the buddhist backgrounds of my peers made me believe in Ghosts and Vampires then. This is perhaps why i was so immersed and absorbed in Lin Zheng Ying's movies at first sight. He made us believe that we should never be afraid of any Ghosts or Vampires. There is always someone around the corner who is capable of protecting us, be it Zheng Ying, Guan Kong or Buddha. The impression of a yellow robe hero was thus imprinted in my memory since i was 10 years old.

Starting out as only interested in all his Taoist style performance, i slowly went about to discover more about him. I started watching any movies that he acted in, directed in or even just appeared in for a few seconds. And i found out something great...

[Lam in his Vampire Series]
Zheng Ying in his Vampire Series

He was a good actor, or should i say he was a very good one? Not only have he acted in horror movies that involve vampires, ghosts and demons, he had also played a major part in several top selling movies like the Painted Faces in 1988, which he is the Cameo. Besides that, he had also directed several movies and was a producer for some films like the Green Hornet in 1994. All his work are really commendable products of efforts.

Despite his built, he was also quite skilled in martial arts - Just look at him "play" with those vampires and stick those coin swords into their throats. Though there may be many NGs in some of these scenes, his skill was very much put to display. Take a look at all the moves he created by himself in Magic Cop and how he performed them. It's really a sight to behold.

Besides performing such acts himself, he had also helped Bruce Lee in producing many of Lee's top selling movies. In fact, he was the martial arts director for several of Bruce Lee's films. Both of them often put their minds together to compose new styles of martial arts. It was a pity that Bruce died so early and they could no longer work together.

Good things always come from failures as the old proverbs used to say. Zheng Ying did encounter some tough obstacles when he chose to be an actor, as a priest. His actual life was not going as smooth as he wanted to. But he persevered and carried on with his new job. Unlike most actors nowadays who always want to change roles, Zheng Ying never grumbled much about his stereotyped role as the yellow robe priest, or more specifically the one eyebrow Taoist.

He was professional in his job and he devoted all his heart in producing great movies for his fans. Modern actor or actress should really learn from him. Paying him only $100 to perform or paying him $1000 to perform will have no difference. As long as he accepted the deal, he will put his mind and soul into it. His intensity of devotion is really admirable.

In most of his Taoist movies, he was able to perfectly portray a hidden sense of style, aura and charisma. That was what made him so outstanding to me. Whenever he puts on the priest robe and swings his wooden sword, it will always make us believe he is the hero who will save the day.
There are no demons which he cannot destroy, and there are no vampires which he cannot kill.

Perhaps some of these beliefs that we have may stem from the handiwork of some movie production skills. However if it were not for Zheng Ying, no added special effects would ever look good. If you have watched A Date with the Vampire Series, you will know what i mean. Without Zheng Ying being there, the whole series just lacked a sense of righteousness, heroic, world saving and vampire-like feelings. It was never considered a good vampire series in my dictionary. The core good guy is not there...

Besides being a good guy in most movies, Zheng Ying has also acted as a bad guy before. However, even when he was a bad guy, he puts in all his effort into his acting. That is why most movies with him as a baddy were also quite memorable. As a bad guy, he helps to bring the story of the movies to a climax. You will hate him but still admire him for what he is, and what he is capable of.

[Lam with Yuen Biao]
Lin Zheng Ying fighting Yuen Biao

Just before his death, his last group of friends would be Sammo, Yuen Biao, Jackie, Yuen Kwai, Yuen Wah and gang. Qi xiao fu, known also as The story of the Seven Little Fortunes and Painted Faces, consisted of almost this whole gang of his friends. In the movie, Zheng Ying acted as an aging Cantonese opera star who can no longer perform for his audiences. It is bitter and touching, a good catch for most chinese historians who want a better knowledge about opera life and their termination.

Another interesting point to note about this fantastic actor is that there were rumours about his love affairs with a lady acquaintance of his, right before his death. Although he is quite old at that time, his charm was still strong. Simply marvellous right?

I shall not reveal that girl's name but you can see her somewhere on this page. I guess you will know who she is instantly. It is just too obvious because there is only one lady in all these pictures here.

[One Eyebrow Taoist]
Zheng Ying, The One Eyebrow Taoist

It was a sad thing to see him leave us so early, at such a young age... Both his old friends like Sammo, Yuen Biao and me felt quite a great loss on the day of his departure. He was a great guy who wasn't proud and arrogant even when he made it up to the top. Among all other actors, he is the only one who commands quite a great deal of respect from me.

May his work live on and all his fans contribute to maintaining this memorial hall for him.
He shall then rest in peace and protect us from all evils, always......
